AUSTRALIA- VARROA MAY BE THE END OF HONEY BEES
Local beekeeper groups and scientists from CSIRO and the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) are worried the Varroa mite, fatal to the European honey bee, will soon enter Australia. And although it is not likely the entire bee population will become extinct, the environmental and economic impact would still be devastating. The mite kills and feeds off the blood of the European honey bee, which is responsible for the pollination of about 60 per cent of crops as well as producing honey in Australia. The Varroa mite found its way to New Zealand in 2000, and was discovered in Papua New Guinea a few months ago. Over $3.5billion worth of crops will face economic difficulties if the cost of pollination suddenly rises as a result of the eradication of wild honey bees. QBI?s Dr Charles Claudianos said money was being sought for a three-year collaborative study between UQ, CSIRO and scientists in New Zealand and Brazil to solve the Varroa mite problem.

SPAIN- IMPOSE A FEE TO THE BEEKEEPERS OF ZAMORA, CASTILLA AND LEON
The imposition of a fee of 3 euros per hive in the Muelas de los Caballeros county is creating great unease among beekeepers, and it echoes the agrarian Coag-Zamora, who regrets 'the low sensitivity of the Municipal Councils Ordinance to approve a prosecutor to bring as a consequence the abandonment of beekeeping activity in the municipality. ' For the union, the establishment of such fees can only be understood 'from the collection effort, without assessing the current minimum profitability of the activity for beekeeping.'
